Angiotensin Converting Enzymes Inhibitors (ACEi) and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARB) are the drugs of choice in managing hypertensive conditions in patients with co-morbidities such as Diabetes or Chronic Kidney Disease. They are especially helpful in patients with concomitant kidney diseases because they decrease the pressure exerted on the kidney by the blood, thus decreasing stress on the kidney, while also decreasing blood pressure. Like all medications, there are side effects and the most common for ACEis are cough, ARBs usually do not produce this. These drugs should not be given to pregnant patients; they can cause oligohydramnios, renal dysplasia, intrauterine growth retardation and many more complications. In addition to their use in blood pressure reduction these medications have also been shown to reduce mortality in patients who have experienced a myocardial infarction and those with chronic heart failure.
