Diuretic medications are useful in treatment of hypertension by reducing the kidney’s reabsorption of the euvolemic water. There are 6 classes of Diuretics that act on different receptors along the kidney’s tubular system. Loop diuretic group is the most potent diuretic medications. However, physicians should take into considerations of the side effects of these diuretics. Most common side effects among these diuretics are the depletion of the body’s important chemical substances such as Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Magnesium, etc. As chronic hypertensive patient will develop chronic kidney failure, diuretic medications may become less efficacious. Most of these diuretics will require optimum renal function.
